Reverse intaglio jewelry was very popular during the Victorian era. A reverse crystal intaglio is an image which is carved into the flat back of a cabochon cut rock crystal (a classic intaglio would be cut on the front). Then the carving is painted with colorful oils so the image appears three-dimensional when viewed through the top.
