Byzantine (the Eastern Roman Empire) circa 6th century AD.
This very rare and unusual early Christian silver ring is engraved with an angel with raised wings and hands covered with drapery, bowing in veneration.
The pose and the style of the engraving is similar to the engraving of the angels on the pendant from the Ferrell collection (e.g., similarity in poses, hands covered in drapery). See Treasures of The FERRELL Collection by Jeffrey Spier, page 224.
The engraving lines of the angel on this ring is done in the same manner as the engraving lines on a ring from the Byzantine collection at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington D.C., which is stated to be found in Constantinople and is dated circa 6th century AD. See Catalog of The Byzantine and Early Mediaeval Antiquities in The Dumbarton Oaks Collection, Volume 2, plate XLII.
Condition: some old contact markes from wear, all original and wearable.
The engraved oval plaque with the angel measures 15 x 13 mm (5/8 x 1/2 in.)
Weight is 5.54 grams.
