‘A Date’
Original watercolor on paper by Sergei Solomko, circa 1910, depicting a courting couple in traditional Russian attire.
Sergei Sergeivich Solomko (1867-1928), a prominent book illustrator and watercolor painter, graduated from the Moscow School of Painting and St. Petersburg Academy of Art; a fashionable artist of the early 1900s whose watercolors were reproduced in huge numbers on postal cards of the period. His favorite subjects were romantic couples in traditional Russian costumes and historical genre scenes.
Solomko was employed by the firm of FABERGE as a miniature painter.
An antique silver and enamel box with a miniature on lid painted after this particular watercolor was sold at Sotheby’s Russian sale in New York on April 26, 2006, Lot 197.
