circa 1890s
Finely crafted in silver over 14K gold, this exquisite Belle Époque festoon necklace showcases the refined elegance and lightness of design characteristic of the period. Eight oval amethysts of a rich royal purple hue, each displaying some flashes of pink, are accented by numerous old mine brilliant cut and rose cut diamonds, adding sparkle to the composition.
The diamonds are set in silver to enhance their brilliance, while the reverse of the necklace is in 14K gold, a typical technique of the period. The airy festoon design reflects the era’s fascination with fluid lines.
The silver chain is adjustable, allowing the necklace to be worn at its full length of 47 cm (18¼ in.) or shortened to 38.3 cm (15 in.) as a choker.
A superb example of Belle Epoque craftsmanship, this necklace remains in excellent condition.
It is marked on one of the chain rings with the French control mark “ET” (étranger – “foreign”), indicating importation into France.
