Spain, circa 1930
This ornate Art Deco era pendant is finely crafted in 18K gold and platinum and features a carved bone bust of the praying Madonna. The composition is designed in the form of an arched medieval window, with the Madonna set against a shaded blue plique-à-jour enamel background and flanked by two carved bone columns.
The gold bezel is embellished with geometric platinum appliqués in the Art Deco taste, accented with rose-cut diamonds that enhance the pendant’s refined architectural symmetry.
Plique-à-jour (French for “letting in daylight”) is a translucent enameling technique resembling miniature stained glass. It reached the height of its popularity between the 1890s and early 1900s, admired for its luminous, ethereal effect.
The pendant measures without bail 37 x 29 mm (1 1/2 x 1 1/8 in.)
