An ancient Roman carnelian intaglio ringstone, circa 1st-2nd century AD, is mounted in a modern high karat gold setting.
The stone is engraved with Janus, the Roman god of change, transition, and all beginnings. He also represents time, because he could see into the past with one face and into the future with the other. Supposedly, January, the first month of the year is named after him.
The gold bezel measures 12 x 11 mm.
