England, circa 1630
This antique low-dome posy ring, of substantial weight, is crafted in approximately 20.07 karat gold. Finely engraved in elegant italic script on the interior is the inscription: “Vertu passeth riches.”
Such inscribed rings are known as posy rings – named after the French word poesy, meaning poetry. The inscriptions found on posy rings were often repeated across examples, suggesting that goldsmiths likely used reference books or lists of phrases from which customers could choose.
This particular ring stands out not only for its beautifully engraved inscription but also for its notably heavier weight compared to most 17th-century rings of this type.
The condition is excellent, with no rim bruises, dents, or signs of deformation.
