made in Saint Petersburg, circa 1913.
Romanov badges were given to those who were honored to congratulate in person Their Imperial Majesties at the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov reign in 1913.
The badge is designed as a crowned shield with the Romanov dynasty griffin carrying a sword and a shield. The border of the shield is embellished with eight lion heads. The shield is mounted on a ribbon tied laurel and oak wreath. Dates ‘1613-1913′ are struck on the ribbons.
Marked with 84 zolotnik old Russian silver standard, St Petersburg assay mark, and master’s initials ‘К(?)’ . The initials are almost certainly of Konstantin Prokofiev who worked for the renowned Kortmann jewelry firm which specialized in various types of insignia, commemorative badges, and jetons.
The Romanov badges were commissioned at several St. Petersburg and Moscow jewelry shops. This badge with its sharp details is of a finer quality than majority of similar badges.
The badge measures 45 x 33 mm (1 3/4 x 1 5/16 in.)
