An Antique Russian icon of Christ Pantocrator (“Almighty” or “All-powerful” in Greek)
The icon is painted on a wooden panel and overlaid with a gilded silver oklad (riza). The oklad was made in Moscow between 1908 and 1917 by one of the best silversmiths of the period, Sergey Zharov, who specialized exclusively in silver icons. Size 10 1/4 x 12 in. (26 x 30,8 cm)
Christ is holding an open Gospel book in his left hand while blessing with his right. Restrained, yet elegant, halo of Christ is finely engraved with three arms of the cross, abbreviation for PANTOKRATOR, and Greek key pattern border. The halo has a fine matte finish and boldly stands out on a glittering sun-ray surface of the icon.
Marked on the lower rim and on the halo with 84 zolotniks Russian Imperial silver standard (875 silver)/Moscow assay office 1908-1917, and master’s initials of Sergey Zharov.
The icon comes with its original Karelian Birch glazed case (kiot).
