Circa 1830, Naples, Italy
A finely carved, high relief cameo of an ancient goddess is set in an elaborate filigree 18K gold bezel. The bail is a later replacement.
The Bay of Naples was famous for corals of this color. Today Italian corals are very rare due to sea pollution. Majority of carved coral jewelry from that era was produced in Naples. Fine gold filigree jewelry was fashionable in the 1830s.
The bezel measures (without bail) 35 x 30 mm (1 5/16 x 1 1/4 in.)
