Spain, circa 1930s
This ornate Art Deco era 18K gold and platinum pendant features a finely carved bone bust of praying Madonna shaded with pink paint. The carving is executed in Spanish medieval taste.
The depiction of Madonna is set against pink and green plique a jour enamel background and flanked by two columns enameled to imitate marble. Plique-à-jour (French for “letting in daylight”) is a vitreous enamelling technique which resembles stained glass. The technique was especially popular in the 1890s and early 1900s.
The chased gold and openwork platinum bezel is accented with small diamonds.
The back has an engraved inscription in Spanish dated (19)33.
The pendant measures without bail 55 x 33 mm (2 1/8 x 1 1/4 in.)
We had several Spanish enameled pendants of this type in the past. The present pendant is the most elaborate Madonna pendant we’ve ever seen.
