Roman Empire, circa 1st – 2nd century AD
A charming ancient ring in high karat gold, formed as two coiled snakes with their heads set back-to-back and turned in opposite directions. A gold pellet is positioned between the heads. The engraved detailing on the heads and upper shank imitates the texture of snakeskin.
A closely comparable example, also featuring a pellet between the heads, is published in Treasures of the FERRELL COLLECTION by Jeffrey Spier, page 53, no. 29.
Height is 20 mm (3/4 in.)
Weight is 4.07 grams
Approximate ring size 7.5 – 8 (19 mm) resizable
