Eastern Roman Empire – Byzantine, circa 500 – 700 AD.
The front of this large and ornate Byzantine high karat gold (approximately 21.65 Kt) hollow cross pendant is embellished with coiled gold wire designs. Each arm of the cross is applied with five wire scrolls representing the Five Holy Wounds Jesus Christ suffered during his crucifixion. In turn, the four scroll designs of the arms of the cross and one small scroll in the center also represent the Five Holy Wounds of Jesus Christ.
Weight is 9.52 grams.
The cross measures 44 x 32 x 4 mm (1 3/4 x 1 1/4 x 1/8 in.)
