A highly unusual 19th century hollow gold and turquoise cross pendant designed in the style of the Byzantine medieval enkolpion crosses of the 11th – 12th centuries.
Both sides are skillfully hand-engraved in medieval manner: one with a crucifix, another with medallions of Christ (center) and four saints.
Size with bail 48 x 29 mm (1 7/8 x 1 1/8 in.)
