Vienna, circa 1890
The brooch is crafted in 14K gold and and silver. It features a reverse rock crystal intaglio with three carnations set in a rose cut diamond bezel.
A reverse crystal intaglio is an image which is carved into the flat back of a cabochon cut rock crystal (a classic intaglio would be cut on the front). Then the carving is painted so the image appears three-dimensional when viewed through the top.
Marked on frame with Austro-Hungarian dog’s head assay mark and ‘W’ for Vienna.
Width 30 mm (1 1/8 in.)
