circa 1880s
This magnificent Victorian era pendant / brooch is designed as a large Byzantine (frequently called Maltese) cross set with bright white diamonds, gray pearls, and vivid green Russian demantoid garnets. The cross is handcrafted in silver-topped gold (front – silver, back – 14K gold).
The center stone is an antique cushion cut diamond measuring 7.6 x 7 x 2.55 mm, approximately 1.10 ct, G color, VS1 clarity.
The weight of the four smaller diamonds can not be precisely determined because they have closed back settings. Rough estimate: 0.33-0.40 ct each, G-H color, VS1-VS2 clarity.
Approximate total diamond weight is 2.50 carats.
The borders of the cross are set with 92 perfectly matched, sparkling, old cut Russian demantoid garnets of a uniform rich green color.
Each arm of the cross is centered with a 6 mm gray pearl. The pearls are likely a later replacement.
There is a hook on the back of the lower arm of the cross from which an additional pendant can be hung.
Weight 25.37 grams.
Width 46 mm (1 13/16 in.)
