This elegant antique ring is set with an authentic Roman agate cameo, carved circa 100–200 AD. The finely detailed cameo depicts the head of a curly haired child, likely Eros, the Greco-Roman god of love.
The ancient cameo is mounted in a later gold ring, probably dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, crafted in approximately 12 karat gold.
The cameo measures 11 x 8 x 3 mm (7/16 x 5/16 x 1/8 in.).
Ring size 6.5 (17 mm).
A comparable 18th century gold ring set with a Roman cameo dating from the 2nd to 4th century AD is illustrated in Antique Jewellery by John Benjamin, page 40.
