This late 1790s – early 1800s carnelian intaglio features a neo-classical profile of Queen Luise of Prussia (1776-1810), who made neckerchiefs popular.
Luise is wearing a neckerchief, a pearl tiara, and a strand of pearls in her hair. Her daughter, Princess Friederike Luise Charlotte Wilhelmina (1798-1860), was married to Tsar Nicholas I of Russia.
The intaglio is clearly a work of a great gem carver.
The 22 x 17 mm intaglio is set in 18K gold neo-classical twisted bezel. The 14K gold shank is probably of a later date (mid to late 1800s).
