Russian, circa 1880
This elegant Victorian era 14K gold and pearl brooch is designed in the ancient Greek style that was revived in jewelry in the late 1800s.
The brooch features a superbly modeled, chased and engraved 3-dimensional head of a mouflon (Aries the first sign of the zodiac).
It is likely that the design of this particular brooch was inspired by the ancient Greek gold bracelet with two mouflons from the collection of the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg.
Marked with 56 zolotnik Imperial gold standard.
Width 47 mm (1 7/8 in.)
