Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine), circa 500s AD
This rare early Byzantine silver ring is finely engraved with an archangel in a long tunic, turned to the right and holding a globe. The design closely follows that of gold coins of Emperor Justin I (ruled 518–527), on which an archangel holding a globe first appeared.
A gold ring engraved with a similar scene is preserved in the Byzantine art collection at Dumbarton Oaks.
The bezel measures 17 x 13 mm (5/8 x 4/8 in.)
Weight is 5.95 grams
Condition: The silver ring is structurally solid and fully wearable.
