Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine), circa 700 – 1000 AD
This large and impressive Byzantine cross pattée pendant is finely crafted in high karat gold (approximately 23.10 Kt).
Of hollow construction, the cross is designed with flaring arms terminating in eight globular finials. The obverse is inlaid with dark blue glass panels set within channels, centered by a round green glass insert, creating a striking contrast against the rich gold ground.
Condition: Overall excellent for its age. Minor dents to the gold consistent with antiquity. The blue glass shows cracking in three areas, with one small loss; the surface exhibits typical porosity associated with ancient excavated glass. The glass inlays have been professionally stabilized with a modern adhesive.
The pendant remains fully wearable and represents a museum quality example of medieval Byzantine craftsmanship. Crosses of this type are rare in general; examples of this scale are exceptionally rare and of considerable importance. It is a superb example of the finest Byzantine medieval jewelry.
Metal analysis: 96.29 % gold, 2.95% silver, 0.76% copper.
Weight is 9.51 grams
The cross measures 57 x 37 mm (2 1/4 x 1 7/16 in.)
