Probably Moscow, circa 1500
Tempera on wood
Dimensions: 31.5 x 26.2 cm (12 4/8 x 10 1/4 in.)
A rare and devotional early Russian icon depicting the Vladimir Mother of God, one of the most revered and miraculous images in the Orthodox tradition. Likely painted in Moscow around 1500, this icon reflects the stylistic and spiritual gravity of the Muscovite school at the dawn of the 16th century.
The Vladimirskaya type is known for its deep emotional intimacy between the Virgin and Child, here rendered with delicate brushwork and a subtle modeling of features. The Virgin’s tilted head and sorrowful gaze, paired with the Christ Child’s gentle embrace, convey profound maternal compassion and divine foreknowledge.
Despite the passage of centuries, much of the original paintwork remains discernible, exhibiting the hallmarks of the period: soft transitions in flesh tones, restrained but expressive linework, and a glowing background.
Condition: Some areas of old restoration
