circa 1730
These very rare antique dangle earrings are crafted in silver topped gold (front – silver / back – gold). The earrings are embellished with two small table cut diamonds and several tiny rough and irregular cut diamonds.
The table cut is considered to be the first true diamond cut. Table cut diamonds are mostly found in Renaissance, 17th, and early 18th century jewelry. At the time, diamonds were rare and very valuable. With only five facets, table cut diamonds didn’t produce much sparkle. Diamonds were worn as exotic stones. They were highly valued for their hardness and rarity.
Marked on ear wires with later French control marks: a swan shape mark for silver and a clover mark for 375 gold (9 Kt).
